Ashes of Squash

Ashes of Squash

On May 12th and 13th 2017 Truro Squash club hosted the second and third nights of a 3 match tour between top Squash stars Nick Matthew (England) and Cameron Pilley (Australia) for the first ever "Ashes of Squash" challenge series between the two great rival nations.

Nick is the England no1, current World no4 and a three time World champion. Cameron is ranked 17 in the World and holds the World record for the fastest ever hit squash ball at 177mph!

The first night in the series was held in Exeter on Thursday 11th where Nick triumphed in 4 hard fought games. On Friday 12th in Truro Cameron evened up the series with a 3/1 victory, setting up a nail-biting final encounter for Saturday 13th's grand finale and the last in the event series. All three nights were completely packed out, with the noise and atmosphere created by the ecstatic crowd reaching fever pitch. BBC spotlight broadcast live from the Truro club and Radio Cornwall held interviews with the players as part of the build-up and although there were no World ranking points at stake, both Professionals dearly wanted to win the Ashes and hold the prestigious "Boardwalk" Ashes of Squash cup.

In red hot temperatures the players embarked on a match which was destined to last nearly 80 mins and go all the way to a fifth and final deciding set. At this stage the rapturous crowd almost drowned out the referees calls as the Pros fought tooth and nail for the much desired title with Cameron eventually taking the win 11/9 in quite simply the best Squash match ever played in this County. Exhausted and dehydrated the top Squash stars afterwards even embarked on a Q and A session with the crowd, lifting the lid on their World tour encounters, training regimes and lifestyles in order to give Truro the complete Squash experience. Although by no means as famous as their counterparts in sports such as tennis and football, they showed a genuine desire to interact and share close information with the spectators in a way which is often lacking in other high-profile sporting activities.

Thank you to the amazing Truro Squash club for hosting the two nights of unrivalled competitive entertainment, the title sponsors Michael Spiers Jewellers in association with Royston-Leigh and of course to the stars of the show Nick Matthew and Cameron Pilley who may well meet again when they compete in the final rounds of the World Championships later this year in Manchester where it is very possible one of them could lift that title too!!!

Thanks go to Truro SC, Devon & Exeter SC and event coordinator Tim Smith for the above report.
